Your chance to give inputs in the next human outpost in space!

13 September 2017

Do you have ideas on how the next generation of space station can be utilised for the education of students? Send us your ideas for the educational use of the future Deep Space Gateway human outpost.

Read below and submit your ideas not later than 13 November 2017, 23:59 CET.

What is the Deep Space Gateway?

The Deep Space Gateway will be a human habitable outpost near the Moon. The concept of this new strategic station is currently being studied by the International Space Station (ISS) partner agencies (ESANASARoscosmosJAXA, and CSA) as the next step of human space exploration beyond the low-Earth orbiting ISS.

Whilst the Deep Space Gateway may sound like science fiction to many, future students will likely regard this human outpost in space as science-fact.

Therefore, in coordination with the ESA Directorate of Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration, the ESA Education Office is launching a call targeted specifically to the educational community, asking for inputs on how the Deep Space Gateway platform could best be used also for educational purposes.

Calling for ideas

University professors, groups of university students and educational professionals are invited to propose general ideas and concepts that would employ this futuristic outpost to the benefit of the education of students.

Ideas shall not necessarily require dedicated hardware and their implementation should create as little impact on nominal Deep Space Gateway operations as possible (i.e. minimize crew time operations). Ideas that account for long term durability, sustainability and benefit to the largest possible number of students over time are encouraged.

In parallel, the European Space Agency has also recently released a similar call for ideas to the European scientific community asking for input on what types of science they would like to see being performed on the Deep Space Gateway.

The inputs from the educational and scientific calls received by ESA will be analysed and collated in time for a dedicated workshop taking place in ESTEC (ESA’s establishment in the Netherlands) early December this year.  The results of this ESA workshop will then be used in discussions with International Partners about the potential uses of the Deep Space Gateway both for science and education.

Ideas have to submitted by filling in the provided on-line questionnaire not later than 13 November 2017, 23:59 CET.

Your ideas may contribute to further develop the Deep Space Gateway concept and its use for educational purposes. ESA thanks you in advance for your suggestions!
