Call for Media: End of mission and return of ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst

ESA astronaut and current commander of the International Space Station (ISS), Alexander Gerst, is expected to return to Earth with a Soyuz capsule on Thursday, 20 December 2018, landing at 11:03 local time (06:03 CET). Along with Alexander will be NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergei Prokopyev.

Ministers endorse vision for the future of Europe in space

Chaired by the Spanish Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque, ESA’s Ministers in charge of space activities today successfully concluded an Intermediate Ministerial Meeting (IMM18) at ESA’s European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villanueva de la Cañada, Madrid, Spain. The Intermediate Ministerial Meeting is a milestone on the road to ‘Space19+’, ESA’s next Council at ministerial level which will be held in November 2019 in Seville, Spain.

ESA’s Earth Explorer Aeolus satellite has been launched into polar orbit on a Vega rocket. Using revolutionary laser technology, Aeolus will measure winds around the globe and play a key role in our quest to better understand the workings of our atmosphere. Importantly, this novel mission will also improve weather forecasting.

New satellite launch extends Galileo’s global reach

Four more Galileo satellites were launched today by an Ariane 5. Their arrival in orbit brings the Galileo constellation to 26 satellites, extending the global coverage of the constellation. Ariane 5 flight VA244, operated by Arianespace under contract to ESA, lifted off from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, at 11:25 GMT (13:25 CEST, 08:25 local time), carrying Galileo satellites 23–26. The first pair of 715 kg satellites was released almost 3 hours 36 minutes after liftoff, while the second pair separated 20 minutes later.
