Three universities, one challenge: students bring space tech down to Earth

Three university teams are competing for the best non-space business case out of two novel ESA intellectual property technologies. Their ideas will be presented in ESA’s technical centre in the Netherlands 8 July. Interested in seeing what they came up with?
The Space Solutions University (S2UN) Challenge is an initiative of ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office giving university students the opportunity to work with ESA in creating non-space applications based on the Agency’s intellectual property portfolio.
The objective is to provide technical students the chance to work with real space technologies as an integral part of their university education and to develop entrepreneurial skills by creating novel spin-offs from competitive ESA technologies.
Three universities are taking part in this first competition: Portugal’s Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Spain’s Universidad de Oviedo and Italy’s Politecnico di Torino.
The teams have had to create the best business plans based on one of the following ESA inventions:
PAT 360: organic waste processing method, and uses thereof.
The invention tries to solve the different problem of exploiting organic waste using an open circuit organic waste treatment process on an industrial scale, to produce biomass.
- PAT 550:solar array regulator based on step-up and down-conversion.ESA developed a solar array regulator to improve the power conversion between a solar array and a battery.
The teams will present their business cases to a jury and the winner will be selected.
