Monday, 19 June

15:30-17:00 ‘Space 4.0ur future: ESA in motion’, ESA press conference

Jan Woerner, ESA Director General and all ESA directors will introduce an interaction with media on ‘Space 4.0’, an era in which the space sector evolves from being the preserve of the governments of a few spacefaring nations to a new reality, with an increased number of diverse space actors around the world, from public to private, from local to global, from academia to citizens.

Tuesday, 20 June

11:00-12:00 ‘Space 4.0ur Future: Pushing the Limits’

An interaction with Heads of delegations from ESA member states and partners on the evolution of the Agency and its programmes, leading towards the next ESA ministerial meeting in 2019. 

14:45-15:45 Presenting Europe’s new vision for space exploration 

David Parker, ESA Director of Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration, will present Europe’s new vision for space exploration, the European Exploration Envelope Programme (E3P), its content, its goals and its achievements.

The event will include the signing of the first commercial partnership with Space Applications Services, ICECubes, the new way to get experiments on the International Space Station.  A panel discussion and Q&A session with the press will follow with ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer, Athena Coustenis, Chair of the European Science Committee, European Science Foundation,  Laura Gatti, Chair of the Exploration Working Group of Eurospace, David Parker, ESA Director of Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration, Johann-Dietrich Woerner, ESA Director General.

16:00-17:30 Women in Aerospace Europe Round Table and Awards Ceremony

Since its foundation, Women in Aerospace Europe, organises events in the frame of international conferences, workshops and air shows offering a platform for networking, sharing experiences and views on the challenges of global changes in gender diversity, on expanding leadership and inspiring young women to take up studies in STEM subjects.
Round table: Our common future on Space and Security. Where are we today?

Wednesday, 21 June

10:00-11:00 New space exploration competition kickoff

Public announcement of the Space Exploration Masters to raise awareness of the Prize opportunities for the Best Business Success from a Technology Transfer related to Space Exploration technologies and New Business Innovation ideas.

Initiated by ESA and organised by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen, the Space Exploration Masters will implement Europe's goals to explore space for new business innovation and technology transfer success benefiting Earth.

11:15-12:30  The future is here, panel on Govsatcom and 5G

Advances in mobile connectivity are rapidly shaping new markets and societal change, while the need for secure communications poses pressing challenges for institutions and enterprises. This panel focuses on the Govsatcom Precursor programme and the announcement of a 5G Joint Statement, two activities led by ESA, where space-based communications provide solutions, shape infrastructure and exploit market opportunities.

Govsatcom Precursor is a first step by ESA to demonstrate what the European space industry can do to support the European Union’s Govsatcom future initiative, designed to pool and share relevant governmental and commercial satellite solutions to provide secure and guaranteed access to satellite communications in support to applications such as crisis management or maritime surveillance

The 5G Joint Statement sees 16 satellite operators, service providers, manufacturers, and ESA join forces to form a strategic vision for the role satellites can play within future 5G networks, the mobile communications solution of the coming decade. It addresses multiple market sectors, including transport, media and entertainment and public safety.

16:00-17:00 ‘Space 4.0ur future: up and start

Jan Woerner, ESA Director General, together with Eric Morel de Westgaver, ESA Director of Industry, Procurement and Legal Services, will lead this informal interactive discussion with leaders of industries and institutions from a variety of backgrounds and sectors about the tremendous potential of space technology, applications and services for commercial purposes.

10:00-11:15 Round Table on the role of European institutions in the exploitation of Ariane 6 and Vega-C

Satellites from European institutions will play a major role during the exploitation of the new family of ESA-developed launchers, Vega-C and Ariane 6 which will be operative from 2019/2020.
In this round table, high level representatives from important European institutions are invited to debate how they can contribute to guarantee a level playing field for Ariane 6 and Vega-C exploitation with respect to competitors that can count on a very large number of institutional payloads.

12:30-13:00 Signature of the ESA_LAB@HEC memorandum of cooperation 

ESA_Lab@HEC Paris is a cooperation scheme to intensify research, development and outreach between ESA and HEC Paris, one of the leading academic institutions in Europe specialising in education and research in business management. Given the possibility to work on interesting and challenging ideas, students from all degree programmes will be enriched with the knowledge of how disruptive, future-oriented space-based solutions can be developed for the benefit of society and economy. The project is part of the larger ESA_Lab@ platform newly established with the aim of intensifying collaboration with academia.

13:30-14:00  Contract signature with OHB and ESA

A contract for 8 additional satellites to complete the Galileo constellation will be signed with OHB and ESA on behalf of the European Commission.

16:00-17:30 ‘Space 4.0ur future: sound check with citizens – the Moon for our future’

Speakers include Jan Woerner. The ESA Director General will open this discussion on space matters in an interactive way with a diversity of citizens gathered together, and benchmark live the results of the questions raised during a citizens debate on space for Europe organised by ESA in all its Member States in September 2016.

The science mission that captured the public’s imagination in 2014 will be told using spectacular images and videos. From the launch of the spacecraft in 2004 to the waking-up and the landing on the comet in 2014, this presentation will cover numerous aspects (technical, scientific, human, European) of this incredible mission. 

11:00-12:00 ‘Space 4.0ur Future: astrotalk' - Thomas Pesquet (ESA Pavilion, stage outside) 

ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet who has recently returned from the International Space Station ISS tells the exciting story of his six-month Proxima mission in which he took part in over 60 scientific experiments for ESA and France’s space agency CNES and the ISS partners. The mission is part of ESA’s vision to use Earth-orbiting spacecraft as a place to live and work for the benefit of European society while using the experience to prepare for future voyages of exploration further into the Solar System. 

11:00-11:45 ‘Space 4.0ur future – NewGen challenge’ Agora Talk with Students ‘Space 4.0ur Future: NewGen Challenge’ (ESA Pavilion)

Closing ceremony of the Student Aerospace Challenge – Défi Aérospatial Etudiant proposed by the Astronaute Club Européen, ACE, in partnership with Dassault Aviation, Airbus, Safran, Thales and ESA. 

Awards ceremony for winning teams of the Student Aerospace Challenge, an annual competition that allows university students to participate in studies for a reusable manned suborbital vehicle. This is divided into 11 work packages: Aerodynamics and Flight control, Structure, Propulsion, Innovative architecture, Cabin layout (except electronic devices), Onboard systems, Spaceport, Communication, Economical aspects, Legal aspects and Medical aspects. Students have the opportunity to create a team, put their knowledge into practice by working on a specific work package and enjoy an original experience which brings them closer to the aerospace sector. Selected teams had around five months to work on their projects and submit a report. They presented their projects to the partners of this challenge and the best presentations will be rewarded at this ceremony.

15:00-16:00 ’Deflecting asteroids’. Presentation by ESA expert.

Asteroids carry with them old tales of the universe and secrets about the formation of our Solar System. Thousands of these mysterious, ancient and fascinating objects in their orbits around the sun come close to our planet… sometimes too close, as shown by the many scars left by past impacts. Could this happen again? During his presentation, ESA expert will explain asteroid deflection and outline why a precursor mission is important

16:00-17:00  TheAstroPlant citizen science initiative, a space greenhouse on Earth

ESA is teaming up with enthusiasts to build a desktop greenhouse for people to grow plants at home and in classrooms to test potential crops for space. ESA’s Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative team, MELiSSA, has been working for over 27 years to create ecosystems for astronauts. They fine-tune how microorganisms, chemicals, catalysts, algae and plants interact to process waste and deliver unending supplies of oxygen, water and food. Getting the data we need would take centuries because scientists would need to grow each plant themselves. Using a citizen science initiative is new for ESA but has great potential. ESA will present a prototype design for an AstroPlant kit at the Paris Air Show. The event is open to general public, plant experts, hackers, scientists, engineers, biologists, designers, artists, software developers and secondary schools as well as high schools and universities.

Launchers expert Marc Toussaint will give an overview of the highly-successful Ariane 5 launcher,, able to carry payloads weighing more than 10 metric tons to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) and over 20 metric tons into low-Earth orbit (LEO) – with a high degree of accuracy mission after mission. He will also present the future Ariane 6 launcher.

Kids, teens, youngsters, social media followers … life, the universe and everything – welcome to the ESA pavilion! 15:15-16:00 Life aboard the ISS with Léopold Éyharts, ESA astronaut

What is like to live and work on the ISS? Microgravity presents a challenging environment. Whether you're sleeping, changing clothes or working, unless it's secured in place, everything in the ISS around you floats. Even something as seemingly simple as getting up in the morning and getting dressed isn't all that simple… Find out more in a fascinating presentation by ESA astronaut Léopold Eyharts.
