This image shows X-rays measured by the German ROSAT mission of the region around the Moon. Orange pixels highlight X-rays measured by the satellite. It is striking that the far side of the Moon can be distinguished because less pixels are coloured than the background. This means that the Moon blocks out X-rays coming from the Universe. It is seen as the first confirmation that the cosmic X-ray background radiation comes from outside the Solar System.
