N° 19–2022: Call for Media: Join ESA’s Living Planet Symposium, Bonn, 23–27 May

3 May 2022

Media are invited to join one of the largest Earth observation conferences in the world: ESA’s Living Planet Symposium, at the World Conference Center in Bonn, Germany, on 23–27 May.

Organised jointly with the German Space Agency (DLR), this exciting event offers the opportunity to hear first-hand about the latest scientific findings on our planet, news on satellite missions and how emerging technologies are revolutionising the use of Earth observation data – all of which benefit society and the economy at large.

TAKING THE PULSE OF OUR PLANET FROM SPACE

The Living Planet Symposium 2022 reflects the increasing importance of observing Earth from space to provide critical evidence for global policy on combatting climate change and for action on challenges outlined in Europe’s Green Deal.

In addition to the wealth of sessions on Earth system science and satellite missions, there will also be unique opportunities to hear about the evolving landscape of Earth observation, such as its increasing relevance in the commercial sector, advances in the use of artificial intelligence and new plans to develop digital twins of Earth.

Moreover, media will be able to hear about ESA’s ambitious plans for the upcoming Ministerial Council.

The Living Planet Symposium is an in-person event offering a long-awaited chance to connect with and interview the most eminent scientists, industry champions and representatives from international organisations including the European Commission, Eumetsat, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and more.

Event programme

Opening ceremony 23 May – 09:00-11:20 (CEST)

The opening ceremony, which includes addresses by senior ESA officials as well as heads of German, European and international institutions, will be streamed live from Bonn on ESA WebTV.

The opening ceremony will be followed by an in-person press conference.

Parallel sessions throughout the week will cover all facets of Earth observation such as climate change, commercial applications, New Space, greenhouse gases, digital twins of Earth and much more. Wednesday will be specifically dedicated to climate-related topics and events.

A range of ‘agora’ events will be available where participants can gather and engage with specialists in an interactive setting to develop new ideas and collaborations. A large exhibition area will be dedicated to industry and institutional partners.

All Plenary Sessions will be live streamed on ESA WebTV

About the European Space Agency

The European Space Agency (ESA) provides Europe’s gateway to space.

ESA is an intergovernmental organisation, created in 1975, with the mission to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space delivers benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.

ESA has 22 Member States: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Slovenia, Latvia and Lithuania are Associate Members.

ESA has established formal cooperation with six Member States of the EU. Canada takes part in some ESA programmes under a Cooperation Agreement.

By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, ESA can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. It is working in particular with the EU on implementing the Galileo and Copernicus programmes as well as with Eumetsat for the development of meteorological missions.
