N° 12–2022: Invitation to media: photo and video opportunity – come and see Juice in all its glory

30 March 2022

Media representatives are invited to join a video and photo opportunity session on Tuesday 05 April, 11:00 onwards CEST, with experts on ESA’s Juice (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer) mission, the European mission that will explore the Jovian system and search for oceans on Jupiter’s icy moons Europa, Callisto and Ganymede.

If you can’t wait to meet real people in the flesh again, or to see space hardware up close, ESA invites you to meet Juice in the Airbus Defence and Space’s cleanrooms in Toulouse, where the spacecraft is starting its electromagnetic compatibility testing. The spacecraft will be in a “once in an Earth time” configuration: all instruments are now integrated and the 16-m-long antenna for Juice’s RIME instrument (Radar for Icy Moons Exploration) will be fully deployed to perform the tests.

ESA and Airbus experts will also be available for interviews.

ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, Juice, will make detailed observations of the giant gas planet Jupiter and its three large ocean-bearing moons – Ganymede, Callisto and Europa – with a suite of 10 state-of-the-art remote sensing, geophysical and in situ instruments. The mission will characterise these three moons as both planetary objects and possible habitats, explore Jupiter’s complex environment in depth, and study the wider Jupiter system as an archetype for gas giants across the Universe, addressing two core themes of ESA’s Cosmic Vision programmeHow does the Solar System work? and What are the conditions for planet formation and the emergence of life? The mission is planned for launch in 2023 and arrival at Jupiter in 2031.

For electromagnetic integrity constraints and cleanliness control reasons, the clean room capacity is limited: hence we will have to accept requests on a first-come, first-served basis.

For ethics and compliance reasons, travel costs will not be reimbursed. A buffet lunch will be provided.

About the European Space Agency

The European Space Agency (ESA) provides Europe’s gateway to space.

ESA is an intergovernmental organisation, created in 1975, with the mission to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space delivers benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.

ESA has 22 Member States: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Slovenia, Latvia and Lithuania are Associate Members.

ESA has established formal cooperation with six Member States of the EU. Canada takes part in some ESA programmes under a Cooperation Agreement.

By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, ESA can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. It is working in particular with the EU on implementing the Galileo and Copernicus programmes as well as with Eumetsat for the development of meteorological missions.
