N° 21–2023: Media Invitation: 20 years of ESA exploration of Mars

15 May 2023

On 2 June 2023, ESA will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Mars Express spacecraft. To mark this occasion, ESA’s operations and mission control centre ESOC will host an event in Darmstadt, Germany - focusing on Mars Express and its achievements while also highlighting the ongoing ExoMars mission and ESA’s future Mars plans.

Launched in 2003, Mars Express is Europe’s first planetary mission. It carries eight instruments and deployed a lander, Beagle 2. The lander was lost during its attempt to reach the planet’s surface, but the orbiter continues its highly successful global investigation of Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos.

There will be presentations on the past, present, and future of Mars exploration, highlighting the scientific breakthroughs, and discoveries. Media representatives will also have the opportunity to meet and interact with the scientists, engineers and other team members who have made the Mars Express mission a success and continue to work on ExoMars.

Available spokespersons:

  • James Godfrey (ESA Mars Express Spacecraft Operations Manager)
  • Simon Wood (ESA Spacecraft Operations Engineer)
  • Colin Frank Wilson (ESA Mars Express & Trace Gas Orbiter Project Scientist)
  • Daniela Tirsch (DLR Mars Express High-Resolution Stereo Camera Deputy Principal Investigator)
  • Jean-Pierre Bibring (Mars Express OMEGA Instrument Principal Investigator 2000-2020)

Representatives from other Mars Express Instrument teams will also be available.

Media representatives are invited to the 20th anniversary of Mars Express on 2 June.
