N° 48–2022: Media invitation: ESA ESRIN opens its doors for European Researchers’ Night

On Friday 30 September, hundreds of research centres throughout Europe will open their doors to the general public. After two years of online events, ESRIN will again take part in the celebrations by welcoming guests on its premises from 17:00 to 23:00 CEST. Promoted each year by the European Commission, ESA participates in this initiative as part of the Frascati Scienza consortium.

European Researchers’ Night is targeted at people of all ages who want to know more about science, research and space exploration. Its aim is to highlight the incredible possibilities that science can achieve through the collaboration between researchers and citizens.

Communicators and representatives from the scientific world will welcome participants to talk about the ESA universe, its activities and programmes, and how these can benefit everyone in their daily lives.  

Main activities and events

Discover ESA Live

A spectacular LED wall in the Big Hall will catapult the participants into the world of space described by live narration, through the new interactive platform Discover ESA Live.   

Event with ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano

In the Big Hall, starting at 17:00 CEST, guest speakers including ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano, will present will discuss the importance of space in our daily lives. During this event, media will have the opportunity to learn more about the implementation of the new 'IRIDE' constellation for Earth observation. The satellite constellation will be built in Italy within five years with the support of ESA and the Italian space agency ASI, thanks to the resources managed by the Italian Digital Transformation Department as part of Italy’s recovery and resilience plan. The new IRIDE logo contest will be launched in this occasion.

Astronomical observation and rocket launches

Visitors will also have the opportunity to observe real celestial objects in the September sky on the Uliveto Terrace, with ATA’s powerful telescopes. Rocket launches will also be demonstrated to the public in front of Building 14 thanks to the BIS Italia team.

Earth Observation multimedia centre

Another big attraction will be the opportunity to visit the Phi Experience, Memorabilia and Heritage Missions Walkthrough.

Didactic laboratories

Hands-on laboratories hosted in the canteen area will give children aged between 8 and 13 years the opportunity to drive their own Moon rover, discover spacecraft materials and learn more about plant chlorophyllin fluorescence and its importance when monitoring the health of the planet.

Media representatives are requested to register via the registration form, at the latest by Thursday 29 September at 16:00 CEST
