N° 24–2023: Media invitation: ‘Ready for the Moon’

30 May 2023

Media representatives are invited to follow a high-level political conference on 2 June 2023 at Palais Ferstel in Vienna, in which Austria's Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer will discuss current global space activities and ‘Revolution Space’ with ESA Director General Aschbacher, astronauts and representatives from Europe’s space sector.

During the conference,  the current challenges and ambitions of Europe's space sector will be presented and examined in terms of their geopolitical, economic and socio-political benefits. Leading representatives of the Austrian Federal Government and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG, the heads of the space agencies of Germany, France, UK, Switzerland, Sweden, etc. as well as CEOs from industry will be present.

Frank De Winne, head of ESA’s European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, John McFall, member of the ESA Astronaut Reserve and participant in the feasibility study for astronauts with disabilities, and Carmen Possnig, member of the ESA Astronaut Reserve from Austria, will contribute their very special astronautical perspectives.

Space for global challenges

In today's society, space-based systems of telecommunications, Earth observation, navigation, research on the International Space Station and also the exploration of space are indispensable. The USA, China, India and other nations are showing great ambitions here, and Europe must position itself clearly in this geopolitical situation in order not to lose out.
