While today the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) has monitoring systems for the domains of Ground Stations, Control Centre Systems and Infrastructure and Network Systems, there is no End-to-End Monitoring system providing a consolidated view of the monitoring information of all of these separate systems.

Objective

The goal of the study was to create a Global Monitoring and Management system which will interface the above mentioned systems and will be able to provide a consolidated view of all this information.

Achievements and status

It was possible to interface all major systems from the different domains and create a proof of concept prototype, consolidating this information in a single monitoring system. The systems interfaced were:

  • ESOC IT Monitoring System (HP NNM – a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) based interface)
  • Ground Station IT Monitoring System (Nagios – SNMP-based interface)
  • Ground Station Systems (LMS – custom web service interface)
  • Mission Control System (SCOS – an SMF based interface for retrieving telemetry parameters). It is possible to also interface SPMON via an SNMP based interface for missions that use SPMON.
  • Various MS Windows, Linux and Solaris based platforms (collecting various information: e.g. CPU, memory, disk space, network, folder monitoring,…)

Benefits

Having all this information in a single system allows for having a consolidated view of different domains (i.e. a mission can see the status of all systems that it is using directly or indirectly). Moreover, it allows for cross correlation of information for improved troubleshooting and potential future automation scenarios.

Next steps

Major stakeholders in the study were the Integral and XMM missions. The missions decided to take on board the study outcome with the intention to use it as a top level monitoring system. They will further improve it in order to use it in their operational environment and reduce the operational effort of maintaining their missions.
