Amelie Schoenenwald was born in 1989 in Germany.

Between 2009 and 2015, Amelie graduated from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany, with a bachelor’s degree in molecular biotechnology, a master’s degree in industrial biotechnology and a master’s degree in biochemistry. 

She completed her doctorate in integrative structural biology from the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, in 2020, where her research was in structural biology, virology and immunology. 

In 2021, Amelie earned a master’s degree in business administration at the Collège des Ingénieurs in Germany, France and Italy. 

Next to her mother tongue German, Amelie is fluent in English, and also speaks French, Spanish, Norwegian and snippets of Hebrew and Portuguese. 

Experience

While pursuing her doctorate, Amelie was a scientific project lead at the Max Perutz Labs in Austria, Singapore and Israel.  

In 2020, she worked as a protein scientist at a biotech start-up and worked as an external consultant at an Austrian-German private university.  

Between 2020 and 2021, Amelie became a business development manager and a process manager for a large healthcare company in Germany. She also gained experience as a part time freelancer and consultant for several German Start-Ups from 2021 to 2022.  

At the time of her selection, she was a medical expert manager in the field of rare immunological diseases. 

Amelie has diverse experience with jungle and speleological expeditions i.e., cave exploration and volunteer work as a mentor and for humanitarian projects. In 2022 she was selected as the president of her MBA alumni association. 

Her favourite activities include travelling, mountaineering and motorcycling. 

ESA experience

In November 2022, Amelie was selected as a member of the ESA astronaut reserve.
