Aeolus, the European Space agency’s newest Earth Explorer mission will soon be launched from Kourou.

Lift of is scheduled on 21 August on top of a Vega from Europe's Spaceport in French Guyana.

Aeolus will measure wind profiles from Space with a combination of Laser and Doppler technologies, which has never been done before.

Data on winds is a long time request from the scientific community in particular for weather forecast and climate studies. 

So why are these wind profiles so important? How do winds work and how do they impact life on our planet?

This video explains what are the winds and visits the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in Reading, UK, involved in Aeolus data processing.
