- Description
ESA astronauts carry out science and operations in space on behalf of ground-based researchers. Once an astronaut has been assigned to a space mission, they are trained in the specific tasks and experiments they will conduct once in orbit.
In this clip, ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer participates in DNA sequencing training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, USA. ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst trains in the operation of ESA’s ICE Cubes facility in Europe’s Columbus laboratory. This facility offers fast, simple and affordable access for commercial research and technology experiments in microgravity. Alexander also undertakes virtual reality (VR) training for an investigation into how astronauts perceive time in space.
ESA astronaut Tim Peake is shown at the Japanese space agency JAXA’s Tsukuba Space Center, training to conduct science in the International Space Station’s Japanese module. Finally, ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano is seen training for a muscle physiology experiment known as Sarcolab that uses a muscle measurement machine called MARES, an emulsions experiment known as FASTER housed within the European Drawer Rack, and the Gravi-2 experiment investigating plant growth in space.
