In brief

The 7th edition of the YLS was organised in virtual format on 23 September 2022 and this year’s Young Lawyers’ Symposium saw a record number of 60 abstracts in total for the 3 discussion panels of which 9 were chosen to be presented to the chairs.

Panel 1 of the Young Lawyers’ Symposium was chaired by Dr. Marco Ferrazzani and by Prof. Armel Kerrest and the panellists consisted of Arthad Kurlekar and Geetanjali Kamat. The discussion topic for panel 1 was “The legal consequences of active debris removal”.

Panel 2 of the Young Lawyers’ Symposium was chaired by the ECSL’s Executive Secretary, Rosanna Hoffmann and by Prof. Balázs Bartóki-Gönczy and the panellists were Ciara Finnegan, Georgia-Eleni Exarchou and Sima Moradinasab. The topic of discussion for panel 2 was “The legal status of humans in outer space”.

Panel 3, chaired by Prof. Sergio Marchisio and Prof. María-del Carmen Muñoz-Rodríguez and the panellists consisting of Sofia Kassara, Florentine Vos and Charlotte Croison, discussed the “Existing legal framework in connection with the ongoing challenges and opportunities due to the rise of mega-constellations”.

The ECSL wants to congratulate and announce the winner of each panel:

Panel 1: Geetanjali Kamat who presented the topic: “Removing space debris; How can we work within the fault-based liability regime?”.

Panel 2: Georgia-Eleni Exarchou who presented the topic: “The Rescue and Return Agreement; Legal challenges from commercial spaceflight”.

Panel 3: Charlotte Croison who presented the topic: “How the ITU could mitigate the risks caused by the rise of mega-constellations in orbit?”.

The ECSL is happy to announce that the winners of the 3 panels have the opportunity to publish their written articles on the ESA/ECSL website. These will be made available in due course.
