During the second week of the 60th session of the Legal Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, the afternoon session on 8 June 2021 was reserved for the joint Symposium of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) and European Centre for Space Law (ECSL).  This years theme was “Space law for the global space economy”, which was co-chaired by Kai-Uwe Schrogl of IISL and ECSL Chair Sergio Marchisio.

The IISL and ECSL are both observers at the Legal Subcommittee. This symposium brings together academic experts and leading practitioners in the field of space law, policy and regulation to discuss pressing issues and to propose solutions to the international community.

The event focused on major elements related to the global space economy, considering how regulation impacts economic prospects and may increase the benefit for all actors. By a collaborative study of interrelated topics, the Symposium invited discussion on how to shape legal instruments upholding the rule of law and providing the Legal Subcommittee with suggestions for its work. After the presentations were held, questions by the Delegates were answered.
