N° 8–2023: Call for interest: Juice launch media programme at Europe’s Spaceport

8 March 2023

ESA’s JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (Juice) will launch from Europe’s Spaceport at Kourou in French Guiana on Thursday 13 April 2023.

Journalists interested in covering the launch from French Guiana are invited to express their interest in joining the launch media programme by Monday 13 March 2023.

The media launch programme, which is outlined below, is part of a wide range of media activities available to journalists on this unique scientific mission.

ESA will also offer interview opportunities in Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish in the weeks leading up to launch. In addition, journalists will be invited to join an online press briefing in English on 6 April 2023, and to register for a launch media event at the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, on 13 April 2023. Media accreditation for all these opportunities will open shortly.

Europe and its international partners are sending Juice to explore Jupiter and its three largest icy moons– Ganymede, Callisto and Europa – with a suite of ten unique science instruments, one experiment and one radiation monitor.

The mission will characterise these ocean-bearing moons as both planetary objects and possible habitats for life. It will also explore Jupiter’s complex environment in depth and study the wider Jupiter system as an archetype for gas giants across the Universe.

Juice will complete several Solar System firsts. It will be the first spacecraft ever to orbit a moon other than our own – Jupiter’s largest moon Ganymede. And en route to Jupiter it is expected to perform the first ever lunar-Earth gravity assist to save propellant.

Juice will also be the last ESA mission to launch on an Ariane 5 from ESA’s Spaceport in Kourou, before Ariane 6 takes over.

Programme

*Please note that the programme can be modified at short notice because of operational constraints.

Monday 10 April – Friday 14 April 2023

  • Ariane 5 rollout to launchpad;
  • Visit of the Ariane 5 and Ariane 6 launch control centres;
  • Visit of Ariane 6 launch facilities;
  • Launch viewing from the media centre at the Jupiter control complex or from the Toucan viewing site;

ESA spokespeople and experts, as well as spokespeople from Arianespace, CNES, ArianeGroup, Airbus and other partners, will be available on site for interviews.

Registration

Please express interest by Monday 13 March at 12:00 CET for the launch media programme in Kourou, French Guiana, by selecting and completing the relevant form at https://blogs.esa.int/forms/esa-media-briefing-form

Please note:

  • ESA will recommend flight dates and accommodation options to confirmed participants to facilitate the trip;
  • because the number of places is very limited, ESA cannot guarantee all interested media will be able to join this visit;
  • accreditation formalities to access the Europe’s Spaceport will have to be completed immediately after confirmation of participation;
